This is my diary of the struggle we go through every day to help my son with his ADHD. I hope our expirience will help other parents who are dealing with the same thing.

7/27/10 Lyme Disease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I KNEWWWWWWWWWWWWW there was something more going on with him than just his ADHD!! I KNEW IT!!! A few days ago my son came to me and said, " Mom, my smile changed." So I took a closer look and sure enough he couldn't move the right side of his face. We went to the Dr. and it's Bell's Palsy. They said it's really rare in children so they did a lyme disease test. It came back positive! And they believe he has had it for quite some time now since it has effected his nerves. After doing some research I found out that lyme disease when left untreated can cause a number of neurological changes.... all very similar to those of ADHD. FINALLY AN ANSWER!!!! He will be starting a long course of antibiotics and I will keep you posted on any changes in his behavior. Please, if you notice serious changes in your childs behavior don't hesitate to talk to your dr. about the possibilty of it being lyme. My son never got a rash or anything!!

Hi I am sorry to hear of your son's health problems but pleased you have found a diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteWhilst there is huge controversy over diagnosis and treatment of lyme disease you need to get well informed so that you can be his best advocate for adequate treatment something difficult to get from most doctors, I would recommend you find a Lyme Literate Medical doctor through one of the many charities or ILADS.
Best wishes Joanne
I am heading to the doctor today for a review on my sons meds.
ReplyDeleteThe begining
My son is now 9 1/2 and has been diagnosed with adhd odd and severe anxiety. He was put on Concerta and it didnt work so they changed him to aderall xr seemed to be the perfect pill for 3 weeks then it stoped working so they bumped it up to 10 mg been on that for almost 4 months and I noticed that he is so depressed and not motivated isnt hearing anything I say. I know the doctor is going to want to bump it up but I tried that all ready no good. Life isnt easy and school is starting back in 2 weeks and I go back to working at the school to. Hope I get some good answers today!

I hope you got good answers too!! I still haven't put my son back on ADHD meds. I know they do help, but I want him to learn how to control himself. I know it's hard, but he is learning. And it's taken a very long time. However, we just received his test results from the state testing that his school does and he scored proficent in all subjects and advanced in science. And he took the test without any meds!!
